Raising a child with textured hair is a journey of love, learning, and cultural connections. For many parents, the transition to caring for kinky and curly hair can feel overwhelming—filled with questions about products, techniques, and the deeper cultural significance of Black hair.
This 3-part workshop is designed specifically for parents of mixed-race girls to bridge the gap between love and technique. Led by Jamilah Shakir, 40+ year veteran and educator in braid and natural hair industry, this class combines hands-on hair care skills with the cultural context necessary to help your child develop a healthy, positive self-image.
What We Will Cover:
- Session 1: Understanding the Texture. Learn the science of curly and kinky hair, how to identify your child’s specific hair type, and the cultural experience of textured hair.
- Session 2: The Mechanics of Care. A hands-on deep dive into the basics: how to detangle without pain, how to wash and condition effectively, and the “no-no’s” of styling.
- Session 3: Styling & Self-Love. Practical styling techniques for school and play, plus a crucial conversation on how to cultivate a healthy attitude toward hair and identity in your home.
Why Attend?
Give your child the gift of positive self-esteem, confidence and give yourself the gift of empowerment. Leave these sessions with a routine, a toolkit, and the confidence to keep your child’s crown beautiful and healthy.
